RESEARCH IMPLEMENTATION

Briefing

We were to use two data collection methods to conduct our research (quantitative/qualitative) with evidence to support the data. I decided to conduct an online questionnaire (quantitative) for students, and an online interview (qualitative) for lecturers.

Initial mind map

Online questionnaire (quantitative)

Feedback: Reflect on the survey questions - whether or not they support the research questions and objectives.

Online interview (qualitative)

Feedback: Get input from lecturers in terms of producing game design elements for a learning environment

*Mr Shamsul and Mr Razif's responses were later compiled in the final report.

Conclusions

The results of the questionnaire and feedback from interviews indicate that:
  1. Gamification can provide viable solutions for the issues of class engagement and motivation, if implemented properly
  2. The elements of game design that are most successful in a general learning environment are leaderboards, achievements and visual progress tracking
  3. Incentive is at the core of any gamified system, be it for learning or otherwise
  4. To develop a gamified system for a learning environment, it is essential that user experience of gameplay is emulated in the system and not just individual design elements
  5. Incorporating the gamified system as part of the students’ grades will incentivize them further, and will also allow the system to work more flexibly in a way that benefits both students and lecturers
  6. Any gamified system applied in a university setting must follow predetermined regulations and work with the established frameworks
